Skopje, 26 March 2024 (MIA) – The Parliament is drafting a declaration to mark the fourth anniversary of the country's NATO accession, and the Parliament Speaker Jovan Mitreski hosted a meeting Tuesday at the MPs Club, attended by three former prime ministers and former Defence Minister Radmila Shekjerinska.

“As the country marks four years since its NATO accession, it is evident that the decisions made have been both courageous and wise, aiming to secure a prosperous future for its citizens. Joined by three former prime ministers and former Defence Minister Radmila Shekjerinska, who raised country’s flag at the NATO headquarters, as well as former MPs, and high-ranking officials, we discussed the contributions each of us has individually made in this process and the path we took to have a secure state today, particularly in the face of nearby military aggression,” Mitreski wrote on Facebook.

Mitreski's office pointed out that this is one of the meetings organized by the Parliament Speaker to mark the anniversary of NATO membership.

SDSM leader and former Prime Minister, Dimitar Kovachevski, wrote on his Facebook profile that with the SDSM’s courageous and decisive decisions, North Macedonia has proudly been a member of the most powerful military alliance - NATO, for four years.

“Ahead of the anniversary of the country’s NATO membership, it was an honour for me to join Parliament Speaker Jovan Mitreski, former prime ministers, former Defence Minister Radmila Shekjerinska, as well as former MPs, ambassadors, and other high-ranking officials. We had the opportunity to discuss each of our contributions to the entire process, the benefits of membership, and North Macedonia's position as a NATO member,” Kovachevski wrote on Facebook.

Today, our country is a factor of stability in the region and beyond, Kovachevski added.

“Security stability brings economic prosperity, as foreign investors recognise North Macedonia as a secure investment destination. This means employment prospects for our citizens, higher wages, and a rise in the overall standard of living. NATO was our primary strategic goal, and we’ve successfully accomplished it,” Kovachevski said.

He expressed confidence and anticipated a new victory on May 8, after which, as he wrote, the pro-European government of SDSM and the coalition will accomplish the second strategic goal - membership in the European Union.
