Mitreski – Wahl: Parliament to work at full capacity until elections held

Skopje, 6 February 2024 (MIA) – Parliament Speaker Jovan Mitreski held a meeting Tuesday with the Head of the OSCE Mission to the country, Ambassador Kilian Wahl, during which they discussed the ongoing cooperation and the obligations of the legislative body during the period until the holding of the upcoming elections, said Parliament in a press release.

According to the press release, at the meeting Mitreski voiced his satisfaction with the long-term and productive cooperation that the country has had with the OSCE over the past 32 years, which, he said, resulted in the holding of the Organization’s Summit in Skopje towards the end of 2023.

Mitreski stressed that the coming general elections are the first regular elections in the country after 16 years, which means Parliament won’t have to dissolve and will work at full capacity until the beginning of the campaign ahead of the first round of the presidential elections, and its term will continue until the convening of the new parliamentary composition.

Speaker Mitreski said he would officially call for elections around February 14, in line with the deadlines specified by the Constitution and the Electoral Code, noting that the current composition of Parliament is focused on ensuring all prerequisites for fair and democratic elections.

Ambassador Wahl congratulated Mitreski on his election as Speaker of Parliament and voiced his conviction that the OSCE’s cooperation with the country will continue in the future.

According to the press release, Wahl said he is glad that the country will have an effective Parliament during the entirety of the electoral process, which, he said, is good for the citizens.

At the meeting, Mitreski and Wahl exchanged opinions on other issues related to the work of Parliament and the coming elections, as well as over the need for a consensus in order to adopt certain laws which are in procedure, said the press release.
