Mirakovska: Boycotting Parliament not a way to move forward, reforms must be passed to take country in EU
Skopje, 6 October 2022 (MIA) – MEPs stressed that boycotting the Parliament is not a way to move forward, and particularly not a way to implement reforms that will take the country to the EU, MP Sonja Mirakovska told MIA after the EU-North Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting.
“That’s why one of the last topics or the fifth topic of our 20th meeting is the Jean Monnet process, because it will bring us a rulebook that will be more modern, more efficient and enable us to practically respond to the challenges, make the Parliament functional, and find a way for compromise solutions with the opposition, so that we can practically implement the reforms, pass the laws to implement the reforms,” Mirakovska said. She pointed out a memorandum follows that will define the role of the Parliament, as well as the Parliament’s European Affairs Committee, and the National Council led by a representative of the opposition, as two important bodies that will share tasks regarding the accession process. Mirakovska noted that immediately after the European Council’s decision, the Parliament adopted conclusions in which it has set the red lines. “The Parliament instructed the Government and future governments on issues that are non-negotiable, i.e. identity issues, Macedonian language issues, issues related to our right to our history, as well as that bilateral agreements should be made in such a way that future governments don’t allow them to be subject to negotiations as part of the negotiating framework, but outside the process,” she added. Mirakovska underlined that the main message of the meeting is that North Macedonia has started negotiations. “European Commission representatives confirmed that things are moving forward with Macedonia, talks have started, the screening process has started, and is expected to end next year, and that we are on the path on which we work together, on the path on which we share information, we are moving forward towards the EU,” said Mirakovska.
