Skopje, 25 July 2021 (MIA) – Ohrid and the region remain inscribed on UNESCO’s prestigious list of world heritage sites, Minister of Culture Irena Stefoska, who also serves as head of the UNESCO National Committee, announced Sunday after the UN body at the 44^th session of the World Heritage Committee decided against classifying Ohrid as site in danger. “We remain inscribed on UNESCO’s prestigious list. But, if the entire coastline, the whole cultural heritage, Ohrid, Struga and Debarca are not inscribed in our hearts, then inscription or removal from any list will be in vain,” Minister Stefoska said. According to her, the Committee has recognized the progress made by North Macedonia and Albania to preserve the unique universal value of the Ohrid region. North Macedonia and Albania, Stefoska said, have obliged to adopt a joint strategic plan for rehabilitation of the region and improve bilateral protection and management of world heritage. “This decision is the final alarm being sounded to speed up activities aimed at protecting Ohrid’s status,” Minister Stefoska urged. In addition to enhanced cooperation with Albania in the period to come, she noted, we’ll also increase cooperation and coordination with the UNESCO World Heritage Center and advisory bodies, the EU and other strategic partners to ensure proper rehabilitation and management of the region of Ohrid and Struga.
