Mickoski unsure if EU integration breakthrough possible by year-end, doing everything to find solution

Skopje, 16 November 2024 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Saturday he is not sure if a breakthrough is possible in the EU integration process by the year-end, but knows the government will do everything in its power to present the case as it is, while adding that constitutional changes are not planned.

PM Mickoski was quizzed by reporters about expectations for a breakthrough in the Euro-integration process by the year-end, considering the current developments in Bulgaria and the failure to elect a parliament speaker there.

"This is not in the plans. I don't know if a breakthrough is possible but what I do know is that we will do everything in our power to try and present our case as it is, before all world leaders, as we have been doing in the past period. Will this result in some progress - I don't know, will our position change - no. This is because our position is based on principles and arguments, something we have said on numerous occasions. If there's a will, there's a way. This does not depend solely on us, it takes two to tango, sometimes even more. In this case, we need an interlocutor that is willing to talk. We are ready, we are presenting our position and will continue to do so, but we do not have any opposing arguments. There is no counter-position 'take it or leave it', the position now is 'let's find a solution'. Will we make progress in a month or two, in six months, I don't know. Will we give our best - yes," said Mickoski.

The PM added that he would pay a visit to Brussels on two occasions in December and again discuss the issue of unblocking the country's Euro-integration.

"A tête-à-tête meeting with (EU Council President Antonio) Costa will take place at the start of December, followed by a dinner with Western Balkans. The EU-Western Balkans Summit will be held by the end of the month, also attended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and other EU leaders. We will fight, we will not sit with a white flag, as was the case before. We will fight and it is important to win. We are gradually starting to get out of the series of defeats we suffered over the past seven years and begin to win, bit by bit. This is our plan, this is our agenda," said Mickoski.
