Mickoski: Safe City's goal is to save lives, politicians making it an ethnic issue is wrong

Skopje, 29 January 2026 (MIA) – The government is committed to putting the Safe City project in operation and following its implementation, the number of road traffic fatalities won’t be so high, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Thursday speaking at a Q&A session in Parliament.

The goal is, he noted, to save as many human lives as possible without taking into consideration their ethnicity.

“Skopje in 2025 registered 28 accidents resulting in 32 deaths. Of those, 17 were Macedonians and 12 were Albanians and members of other ethnic communities. Skopje in December 2025 had zero deaths and there were five in December 2024. In an interview with an Albanian media outlet a few days ago, I said if this is the price the government should pay and if you came to power to scrap this project, meaning you would bring back road accident deaths in the capital, on corridors and in other citizens, I said I’m prepared to pay it. As long as I’m prime minister, I’ll fight to save at least one human life without taking into consideration their ethnicity. I’d be happy for saving lives no matter their ethnic origin,” Mickoski said answering MP Skender Rexhepi’s question.
