Mickoski: Hungary a strong supporter of EU enlargement and our membership aspirations

Ohrid, 27 September 2024 (MIA) - Hungary has always been a strong supporter of the enlargement of the European Union and our aspirations for full-fledged membership, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said at Friday’s joint press conference with his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orban, in Ohrid.

The PM said the two countries have a shared vision of an integrated Balkans, with all countries being a part of the European family.

“This vision doesn’t only refer to the political and economic integrations, but also our shared culture and historical bond, which is key for the stability of the entire Balkan Peninsula. I believe that with the support of Hungary and other allies, the Balkans will take their rightful place in the EU,” Mickoski said.

The PM said the Macedonian and Hungarian people are connected by a “deep-rooted friendship and deep respect”.

“Over the years, our peoples have shown that despite the geographic distance, the shared values and visions are also key for building strong relations. Hungary has always supported us, during our difficult times, but also in our efforts for European integration. Today, through concrete initiatives and agreements, this friendship continues to grow stronger, creating solid foundations for our future cooperation. History is a witness to our shared aspiration for peace, prosperity and cooperation,” Mickoski added.

Mickoski stressed that history is a witness to the shared aspirations for peace, prosperity and cooperation of the two countries.

“In the past, Hungary was one of the first partners who recognized the Macedonian aspirations for independence and sovereignty. The political and economic ties between the two countries have been deepening over the years, and today’s meetings only affirm our strategic partnership. Hungary is not only our partner on the European stage, but also an example of how a country can balance its national sovereignty with global integration,” the Prime Minister said.

Speaking about his tête-à-tête meeting with Orban earlier on Friday, Mickoski said they discussed several topics of bilateral and regional importance.

“We share a joint vision for regional stability and economic prosperity, and today’s discussions were focused on specific projects that will encourage the development of our municipalities and businesses. We discussed strategic projects such as the North-South transport and energy corridor that connects the Balkans to Hungary and which is hugely important for the energy security and economic growth of the entire region, and our cooperation with Hungary will be key for a successful implementation of these initiatives. Hungary is an example of how firm bilateral relations, and a shared vision can produce concrete results,” Mickoski said, adding that he expects Orban’s visit to contribute to an even greater friendship and new opportunities for cooperation.

Earlier on Friday, the delegations of the two governments held a joint session, and bilateral meetings were held between ministers from the two countries.
