Mickoski: Gov't backed Radmila Shekerinska's candidacy for NATO deputy chief

Skopje, 20 November 2024 (MIA) - The Government of the Republic of North Macedonia backed Radmila Shekerinska's candidacy for NATO Deputy Secretary General, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday. He said it was no secret that in the past and to this day they may have many conceptual differences when it comes to the present, to dealing with real problems, policies, ideological differences, because they come from different political families.

"As a Government, we had before us a challenge, so to say, to make a decision on who to support for the next NATO Deputy Secretary General, given that there were candidates from several countries, and we had no dilemma here. Why? First, because we often call for unity, we call for dialogue with the opposition, and if you just call for something without actually doing it, then you are hypocritical. So, as a Government, not only did we support Radmila Shekerinska's candidacy, but we also actively discussed with our allies," said Mickoski.

The PM pointed out that for the Government, national unity and national interests are before and above party interests.

"To have a Macedonian woman, in this case, as Deputy Secretary General of the most powerful and best organized military alliance in world history is truly an honour, and neither I nor we as a Government, who were involved in this process, had any dilemma that we should support the candidacy, and it is good that it was completed successfully," Mickoski said.

PM Mickoski added that he spoke over the phone on Tuesday with Radmila Shekerinska and as he said "we spoke, there is no doubt that we should cooperate together and that we should do everything in our power to help the Macedonian Army and thus help with security and everything that Macedonian citizens need".
