Brussels, 3 May 2024 (MIA) - Free press is the guarantor of democracy. It is imperative that we do everything to support impartial, objective and accurate journalism as key to navigating global crises, said European Council President Charles Michel on World Press Freedom Day. 

"While journalists continue to experience difficult working conditions, the EU must continue to play its part to safeguard media freedom and pluralism," Michel posted on the X platform. 

In March 2024, the EU adopted the European Media Freedom Act, which seeks to enhance editorial freedom, protect journalistic sources and improve the transparency of media ownership in the Union.
