Micevski: Issue with empty seat at Election Commission to be overcome, one candidate has withdrawn

Karbinci, 14 February 2024 (MIA) – With the withdrawal of one of the candidates for member of the State Election Commission (SEC), the opportunity has opened up for the Committee on Election and Appointment Issues to elect the seventh member of SEC, VMRO-DPMNE party whip Nikola Micevski told reporters on Wednesday. With this, said Micevski, the issue with the empty seat at the State Election Commission, which should be filled by a member from the opposition parties of ethnic Albanians, will be overcome.

“We have reports that, regarding the issue that existed in the Committee on Election and Appointment Issues, one of the candidates has withdrawn his documents. So, the opportunity has opened up for the Committee to make a decision and forward it to a plenary session, material based on which one of the candidates, I think his name was Abdush Demiri, will be one of the candidates to fill the position at the State Election Commission,” said Micevski.

Micevski noted that the election of an SEC member requires a two-third majority and, he said, he expects Parliament will elect the new SEC member within the deadline and fill the empty seat in the institution tasked with organizing and holding elections.

Two candidates were in the running to fill the seventh seat at the State Election Commission – Abdush Demiri supported by the coalition of the opposition parties of ethnic Albanians - European Alliance for Change, and Zulfi Adili, endorsed by the European Democratic Party of Arijanit Hoxha.
