MFA: Unilateral statement aims to ensure use of clear formulation of Macedonian in EU documents
Skopje, 21 July 2022 (MIA) - The unilateral statement of the Republic of North Macedonia presented at the first Intergovernmental Conference for the country's EU accession is a statement whose primary aim is to ensure the use of clear formulation for the Macedonian language in Council of the EU documents, without any additional explanation, additions or footnotes, said the Foreign Ministry (MFA). "The statement announces our position, defined in the Constitution of the Republic of North Macedonia regarding Macedonian as an official language of the Republic of North Macedonia across the entire territory of the country and in its international relations," the Ministry said in Thursday's press release. The statement, it added, contains relevant parts of the Constitution, the 2021 Parliament Resolution and the conclusions adopted at a parliamentary session on July 16. "In line with the format of the unilateral statement, a brief overview is included in view of the codification of the Macedonian literary language and its foundation on the specific development of dialects, taken to serve as the basis for codification, which were used on the territory of what is now the Republic of North Macedonia. These include the central dialects of the western Macedonian area spoken along the axis Bitola - Prilep - Veles - Kichevo. Due to limitations involving the format and the goal of the unilateral statement, only a few information and data is included in relation to the linguistic, space and time continuity of the Macedonian language," said the press release. The Foreign Ministry mentioned that the Negotiating Framework for North Macedonia's EU accession, adopted on July 18, 2022, is the first document of the Council of the EU that contains clear formulation about the Macedonian language. "The European Commission has already announced that an agreement on the Frontex status is to be signed soon with a linguistic provision in which Macedonian will be listed individually along the EU's 24 official languages. The Frontex agreement will be the first bilateral agreement between North Macedonia and the EU that will include a standard linguistic provisions with Macedonian being included. All future documents of the European Union in which Macedonian should be included, in its entire legal, political and administrative form will guarantee the equal position of the Macedonian language and its use without additional explanation, adjectives or footnotes," stated the press release.
