Washington, 10 September 2024 (MIA) - North Macedonia is preparing to end the use of coal for its energy needs by 2050 at the latest, and to comply with the European Union’s deadlines for a transition to renewable sources of energy, said First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Izet Mexhiti at the 9th Central and Eastern European Energy Security Conference hosted by the Global Energy Center of the Atlantic Council in Washington.

“Our economy is expected to phase out coal by 2050,” he said in a panel at the conference.

According to Mexhiti, the Government is also working on the completion of the gas pipeline with Greece.

“We are working with our neighbors Greece and Serbia to rely on an alternative independent source of energy such as gas,” Mexhiti said.

The conference discussed transatlantic trade and energy. The main topics were the progress in the introduction of renewable sources of energy in the European Union, the transition away from fossil fuels and compliance with regulators’ deadlines for the use of electric and hybrid vehicles in the EU’s transport.
