Masked parade kicks off 2025 Vevchani Carnival

Vevchani, 13 January 2025 (MIA) – Vevchani Carnival officially kicks off Monday with masked revellers parading in the streets of the village in western North Macedonia.

In keeping with the festival’s 15-century tradition, carnival goers use their masks as a commentary on last year’s political events at home and abroad.

It is believed that carnival goers by being masked drive away evil spirits before celebrating New Year’s Eve according to the Julian calendar.

Vevchani on Monday and Tuesday will be an open-air unscripted theatre, organized by the two Vasilica groups, headed by a groom, a bride, two devils and Stupid August.

This year’s Vevchani Carnival ends tomorrow evening on St. Basil Day with performances by Ljubojna, Naum Petreski, Vevchani Bagpipe and Drums Orchestra. The traditional burning of the masks also takes place tomorrow closing the event.
