Marinakis: Greek Gov’t waiting to see the position of North Macedonia’s new Gov’t

Athens, 15 May 2024 (MIA) - We are waiting to see the position of the new Government of North Macedonia. There are obligations that must be fulfilled, and Greece, as a serious and credible country which sticks to its obligations, will act appropriately, Greek Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis told Greek radio “Parapolitika” in an interview, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports.

In the interview for the radio, but also in an interview for TV “Antenna”, Marinakis reiterated the Greek positions over the Prespa Agreement and relations with the country, noting that there are two parties to the agreement - “Greece, which realistically doesn’t have too many tasks” and “North Macedonia, which had and has a lot to do”.

“When, for now, on the level of the President of North Macedonia they don’t accept the name of their country, why should we rush? Is there a reason for us to rush? We are waiting to see whether North Macedonia will respect the agreed and adopted and internationally ratified provisions of the Agreement,” Marinakis told “Parapolitika”.

The government spokesperson told “Antenna” that on a party level, as New Democracy, they remain of the position that “the Agreement is bad”, but, he said, they clarified from the very beginning that they are obliged to respect it, “since it is a ratified Agreement, adopted by both countries”.

Asked if vetoing the country’s European path is something that Greece is considering, Marinakis reiterated that “North Macedonia’s accession path is entirely dependent on its harmonization with the Prespa Agreement”.
