Marichikj: Reforming some EU rules for new members possible by 2030

Skopje, 3 December 2023 (MIA) - The citizens will experience what it's like to be a part of the European Union much earlier than anticipated. By 2030, it is possible to reform some rules within the EU to admit new members, and until then, it is possible to reform our countries to be prepared for membership, Deputy PM for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj said Sunday at the conference “Utilizing the momentum for enlargement in the changed European security environment.”

The event is organized by the Progress Institute for Social Democracy and the Kalevi Sorsa Foundation from Finland.

“It is essential to have a goal because if we miss this moment, we may only rely on the rise of nationalism in the future,” Marichikj noted.

He underlined that if we miss this moment now, we may only rely on the rise of nationalism and on those political actors and causes that have emptied our countries of young people, and who do not convince that a strategy of waiting is a good strategy.

Marichikj highlighted that the screening process is concluding next week, expressing that, as he stated, we will reach a point of meeting all the prerequisites, except for constitutional changes.

“This is a genuine opportunity that needs to be seized, as it won't last for long. The screening process has been quite intense, progressing rapidly, and it is set to conclude next week in terms of meeting key criteria, such as rule of law and public administration. By the end of the year, we will present this as a document, reaching a point of fulfilling conditions with the exception of constitutional amendments, which are political prerequisites for us,” Marichikj added.

During the discussion, Marichikj also emphasized the Growth Plan. He mentioned that with this plan, the Western Balkan countries can receive a "revolutionary" decision regarding the enlargement of the European Union.

“The Growth Plan introduces opportunities for involvement in programs we haven't previously participated in, providing access to financial assistance essential for implementing the necessary reforms to advance the process. 2030 should serve as an indicative year, accompanied by a plan for the inclusion of Western Balkan countries. I commend the EU's courageous policy for the growth of the union and the strategy they are devising for the enlargement,” Marichikj said.

He emphasized once again that as a country, we cannot afford to miss this moment.

“It's imperative not to miss this moment; waiting is not an option. We must use the chance to integrate into the European front, where everyone is actively involved. Entering the waiting tunnel could mean losing precious time for us,” Marichikj told the conference.
