Marichikj: “French proposal” is a compromise for our sake, not for Bulgaria’s sake

Marichikj: “French proposal” is a compromise for our sake, not for Bulgaria’s sake
Skopje, 14 July 2022 (MIA) - The compromise in the draft-negotiating framework is very simple, a guarantee for the Macedonian language and identity and opening of accession negotiations, on the one hand, and the inclusion of the Bulgarian community in the Constitution, on the other hand, before the continuation of negotiations prior to the second intergovernmental conference, Deputy PM for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj said Thursday evening. “This is a compromise that we are making for our sake, not for the sake of Bulgaria, not for the sake of anyone else,” Marichikj said in an interview with Kanal 5 TV. “Every citizen, every member of parliament, should look at the documents, find one point in this proposal that denies our language, that imposes on us some kind of assimilation or Bulgarisation, as they say during the protests, and who disputes our right to speak the Macedonian language and call ourselves Macedonians. There is no such thing,” he said. According to Marichikj, we have support from Bulgaria, if we accept this package, to sign the agreement with Frontex, which, as he said, is an agreement with the European Union, not only with Bulgaria, which will also include the Macedonian language. “This is our guarantee that Bulgaria will not object to the formulation Macedonian language in EU documents, which was our goal,” Marichikj added. At the end of the process, he said, the Macedonian language will be an official language of the European Union. “We will not and cannot accept anything else. If at any time we receive an unacceptable proposal on language and identity, we have every right to abandon and terminate the accession negotiations,” Marichikj said, adding no one can force us to assimilate and that cannot happen because, nobody can assimilate our feeling as Macedonians or anyone's ethnicity.
