Marichikj - Bóka: North Macedonia's EU integration must continue

Skopje, 28 May 2024 (MIA) - First Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj met Tuesday with Hungary's Minister for European Affairs, János Bóka. The meeting focused on the priorities of Hungary's presidency, aimed at strengthening and supporting North Macedonia's European integration process in the upcoming period, the Secretariat for European Affairs said in a press release.

It was stated that Hungary, as the presiding country, will focus on the enlargement of the EU with the countries included in the enlargement package, with a focus on the Western Balkans and North Macedonia, with a particular emphasis on implementing reforms.

Deputy Prime Minister Marichikj stated that the country must continue the Euro-integration process, which is part of international commitments and obligations for the prosperity of the region, Europe, and all citizens of the country. According to him, assuming responsibilities and fulfilling long-term plans with the European Commission is of vital importance for the progress of the country, international strategic partners, and for shaping the geopolitical landscape of the region and Europe.

Marichikj emphasized the importance of making important decisions for the further realization of North Macedonia's strategic goals and for the region, advocated by EU member states, the Western Balkans region, and all strategic partners of the country.

At the meeting, the focus was also on the commitment of the European Commission to the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans countries, the opportunities, and the specific measures by which the countries included in the Growth Plan will benefit from its implementation from the pre-accession period to full membership in the Union, where they naturally, geographically, and ideologically belong.

Marichikj and Bóka agreed that significant results have been achieved in the European integration process of North Macedonia in the last two years, with the completion of the screening process, the start of negotiations for the country, and the comprehensive preparation for the implementation of the country's European agenda.

"European integration must proceed by undertaking the obligations of the path to the EU, which will drive the country towards progress and significant development. The implementation of the Growth Plan is a crucial process, requiring thorough and diligent engagement of all capacities, with substantial benefits for the country and all its citizens," Marichikj said.

Hungary assumes the Presidency of the Council of Europe from July 1, 2024, until the end of the year.
