MANU President Kocarev critical of agreements with Bulgaria, Greece in personal speech
Skopje, 23 February 2022 (MIA) – The source of our vital issues are all the documents that are inconsistent with the main premise of Macedonianism, including the Friendship Treaty with Bulgaria and the Prespa Agreement with Greece, academic Ljupcho Kocarev, President of the Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences (MANU), said in his speech at the Academy’s annual assembly held Wednesday in Skopje. The country is facing three challenges - Macedonian survival, EU integration and the future of the state, he said in his speech, which as he said, reflects his own personal opinions. According to Kocarev, the Friendship Treaty, the Prespa Agreement and the constitutional changes are “a source of instability in the region.” “Any country that is building its future on illegal or undignified documents, and the three documents are exactly like that stemming from the geopolitical games of major powers, is doomed,” he stated. The Republic of Macedonia in 2018, Kocarev said, was recognized by over 130 countries out of 193 UN members, which is almost 80 percent of the population on planet Earth, including the superpowers China, Russia and the United States. “The Prespa Agreement erased these facts,” he claimed. “In my opinion, for the sake of Macedonian survival, having in mind the multipolar global order, Macedonia’s geostrategic worldview should include fostering of principled and dignified relationship toward the three superpowers,” said the MANU President. Referring to the EU integration process, Kocarev said that the EU has been demonstrating lack of principles and has been sending clear signals, according to many analysts, that full-fledged EU membership is unattainable dream for many Balkan countries, including Macedonia. According to Kocarev, the main premise to build a prosperous Macedonia is to change the electoral model, i.e. to introduce single election constituency, and change the model for the formation of executive government.
