Magnitude 5 earthquake shakes central Greece, no casualties reported
Athens, 9 October 2022 (dpa/MIA) - People in central Greece were shaken by a magnitude-5 earthquake that occurred in the Gulf of Corinth early on Sunday. The quake, at around 1 am (2200 GMT on Saturday), was located at a depth of around 10 kilometres below the seabed, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute. "We have no information on casualties or damage so far," state radio ERT reported. Many people were jolted from their sleep and ran out onto the streets in the region of Delphi and on the northern side of the Peloponnese peninsula, the broadcaster reported. The quake was also felt in the western Greek port city of Patras and in villages near the ruins of Delphi. Moderate and powerful earthquakes frequently occur in the area, where several tectonic trenches run below the Gulf of Corinth seabed.
