Madikj: Judicial Council has legitimacy and integrity in operations

Skopje, 7 November 2023 (MIA) - I will not comment on the views and decisions of courts because that would mean the executive is interfering in the judiciary, Deputy Minister of Justice Viktorija Avramovska Madikj said Tuesday commenting on Supreme Court President Besa Ademi's statements on political pressure and the proceedings of the Judicial Council.

Ahead of the third session of the working group on electoral reforms, asked whether the current Judicial Council has credibility to investigate political pressure at all, most recently with the Supreme Court president, Madikj told reporters that all authorities chosen by Parliament, including the Judicial Council, have legitimacy, integrity and can act.

"Within the past few months we have seen that the Judicial Council is active, unanimously making decisions, and things are starting to move forward," Madikj said.

Supreme Court President Besa Ademi did not attend on Monday a meeting at the Judicial Council, which was initiated following Ademi's interview with the media where she stated that political interference was present in the judiciary.

Judicial Council chair, Sashko Georgiev, said Monday that the Judicial Council works to protect judges, and therefore it was also their duty to invite the Supreme Court President and discuss this.

"We are here for any judge, whether they are coming from the Supreme Court or any other court, let's open the discussion and protect judges," Georgiev stressed. ssh/nn/
