Macron not giving up on agreement over negotiating framework
Brussels, 23 June 2022 (MIA) – French President Emmanuel Macron, whose country holds the EU Presidency by the end of June, is hoping that an agreement between Skopje and Sofia on the negotiating framework is still possible, MIA reports from Brussels. “We are close to an agreement that ensures justification for the Bulgarian demands and is compatible with what North Macedonia can do. We need visibility and trust, there will be a vote in the Bulgarian parliament in the coming hours, we will look towards the Bulgarian President and parties of the current majority, opposition parties,” said President Macron and added that he would hold discussions with North Macedonia on finding ways to come to an agreement that would be endorsed by ambassadors next week so that the process is unblocked,” Macron told a press conference after the European Council. He praised the courage of leaders in North Macedonia, namely Zoran Zaev, for changing the country’s name through constitutional revision. “A member-state asked for changes a bit late but EU cannot pretend they do not exist,” said Macron of Bulgaria and added there is a political crisis in Bulgaria while praising PM Kiril Petkov on his political courage.
