Macron accuses US of abandoning allies, international rules

Paris, 8 January 2026 (dpa/MIA) - French President Emmanuel Macron has accused the United States of turning its back on its partners, citing its trade and security policies.

"The United States is an established power, but it is progressively turning away from some of its allies and breaking away from international rules that it promoted until recently," Macron told ambassadors in Paris on Thursday.

He said there is a temptation among great powers to "divide up the world."

Macron explicitly mentioned China and Russia in his remarks, and warned that all areas for clarifying and pursuing cooperation on common issues were being weakened.

"There is a risk that our Europe will be weakened," he said, saying it could become the last place where we continue to remember the "rules of the game that others no longer abide by."
