Macedonian soldiers help construct temporary bridge in Slovenian town

Skopje, 14 August 2023 (MIA) – Members of the Army of North Macedonia, who are participating in the humanitarian operations in Slovenia following the catastrophic flooding, assisted the Slovenian Armed Forces in the construction of a temporary bridge in the Municipality of Mežica, which was put into use on Monday.

The ceremony during which the bridge was put into use was attended by the Slovenian Minister of Defense Marjan Šarec, who highlighted the importance of the bridge for the local population and economy.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Robert Glavaš, said that the bridge was constructed together with the members of the Macedonian Armed Forces.

“Since the beginning, the Slovenian Army has been cooperating in order to tackle the consequences of the floods. We help where we can. We constructed this bridge together with the members of the Macedonian Army in four or five days,” said Lieutenant General Robert Glavaš.

One hundred Macedonian soldiers are in Slovenia, where they are helping to deal with the damage caused by the floods. Slovenia requested assistance through the NATO EADRCC mechanism.

The members of the Macedonian Armed Forces will remain in Slovenia for 30 days.

Six people died in the worst flooding that the country has experienced since its independence in 1991.
