Ljubljana, 13 May 2022 (MIA) – North Macedonia’s national is among five people that died in an explosion at a chemical plant in Kočevje, southeastern Slovenia on Thursday, Slovenian media outlets reported Friday.
According to the Ljubljana Police Department, of the other four killed, two are Slovenians and two are Bosnia and Herzegovina nationals.
Slovenian Police said the dead people “have not been yet identified, but it is known that three of them are foreigners.”
Ljubljana criminal police chief Valter Zrinski said that for the time being he could not confirm whether the cause of the explosion was human error.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact reason that led to this unfortunate event, Zrinski said, adding that when they have final findings they will inform the competent Public Prosecutor's Office.
The blast occurred on Thursday when a cistern exploded at a resin factory belonging to chemicals company Melamin in the municipality of Kočevje, some 60 kilometers (40 miles) south of Ljubljana.
Local authorities initially asked residents staying within a radius of 500 meters around the plant not to leave their homes and to close their windows as a precaution in case of toxic fumes.
The precautionary measure was lifted later Thursday after officials confirmed there had been no negative impact on the environment.
Nearly 200 people work at the plant of the company, founded in 1954.
