Luxembourg Prime Minister Bettel reacts to plagiarism accusations

Luxembourg Prime Minister Bettel reacts to plagiarism accusations
Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel is facing accusations of plagiarism in connection with his university thesis, according to a media report. On Wednesday, he reacted to the accusations without clearly rejecting them. "From today's perspective, I realize that it should have been done differently," he told dpa. He wrote the paper more than 20 years ago during his studies at the University of Nancy in France. "According to my recollection, I did this to the best of my knowledge and belief at the time," he continued. Bettel was reacting to a report published by the online magazine Reporter.lu on Wednesday. The report accuses the prime minister of using foreign texts without citing the source on 54 of 56 pages (96 per cent) of his 1999 paper on possible reforms of the electoral system for the European Parliament. Bettel said that he "fully trusts University of Nancy to judge whether the work in question meets the criteria of that time. Should this not be the case, I will of course accept a decision to that effect." According to Reporter.lu, the paper had only two pages without plagiarized extracts. These were a few paragraphs in the introduction and in the equally short conclusion. Bettel studied public law and political science at University of Nancy.
