Local, regional divers collecting trash from Lake Ohrid bottom
Ohrid, 30 April 2022 (MIA) — Scuba divers from the country and the region are taking part in a Lake Ohrid cleaning drive organized by Amfora Diving Center with the support of the Municipality of Ohrid and local businesses. According to Amphora head Jovan Sekuloski, divers are collecting trash from the lake bottom near the Gradishte camping site, the Ohrid Museum on Water, and the city harbor. Sekuloski said the harbor and tourist sites were polluted the most, with trash including plastic litter and construction debris. According to Ohrid Mayor Kiril Pecakov, more cleaning drives should be organized to raise public awareness for the need of protecting Lake Ohrid and its surroundings. Mirko Bevenja, a diver from neighboring Serbia, said that polluting the lake was sad. "People need to be made aware of the need to preserve nature and what they have, and we will help clean what irresponsible people have left behind," he said. Croatian diver Robert Kalanj was not surprised by the trash at the bottom of Lake Ohrid, because he had seen a similar situation in the Adriatic Sea. Ivan Jaric, another Croatian diver, said everyone should clean up their own doorstep and leave no trash behind them. mr/
