Loan agreement to be signed to renew Railways Transportation fleet

Skopje, 30 December 2025 (MIA) – An agreement for a loan will be signed Tuesday with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to renew the fleet of the Macedonian Railways Transport national company.
PM Hristijan Mickoski is expected to address the signing with officials of EBRD, the Transport Ministry and the company also in attendance.
Last week, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski said that EBRD had provided 21 million euros for the procurement of at least five new electric locomotives to modernize Macedonian Railways and freight transportation service.
When we formed the government last year, he said, there were unfortunately zero active locomotives – now we have 11. “With nine locomotives that would be electric, we will be able to service the entire freight transportation service starting, I hope, from 2028,” Nikoloski told last week’s Q&A session in Parliament.
