Lloga: Country to follow Bosnia and Herzegovina’s example and have prisons that meet European standards

Skopje, 15 September 2023 (MIA) – During his working visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Minister of Justice Krenar Lloga visited the most modern penitentiary in the Balkans in the Sarajevo Municipality of Ilidža, which has been constructed in line with the highest European standards, said the Ministry of Justice in a press release Friday.

“The construction of this facility has reduced overcrowding in the penitentiaries. The European Union allocated over EUR 11 million for it. It has the capacity to hold 300 prisoners, and 50 detainees. It possesses rooms with the most modern equipment, sports grounds, workshops, food is served in the cells and there is also a special space for prayers and practicing religion,” said the Ministry.

In order to take specific measures and activities aimed at improving the conditions in the penitentiaries in North Macedonia, Justice Minister Krenar Lloga met with the Vice-Governor of the Council of Europe Development Bank, Tomáš Boček, and with Arnaud de Verdière, a country manager from the Bank.

The Justice Ministry said Lloga was informed about the project for the reconstruction of the penitentiaries in       North Macedonia, which is being implemented with a loan from the Council of Europe Development Bank.

The successful realization of the project, said the Ministry, is only one of the foundations aimed at improving the overall conditions in the penitentiaries, the treatment of prisoners, as well as their resocialization.
