Berlin, 26 September 2022 (dpa/MIA) - An unexplained pressure drop in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline that runs from Russia to Germany was caused by a leak south-east of the Danish island of Bornholm, a spokesman said on Monday. "Thanks to cooperation with the maritime authorities, the location of the incident was identified in the Danish EEZ south-east of Bornholm," Nord Stream AG spokesman Ulrich Lissek said. He added that the maritime authorities have established a safety zone of 5 nautical miles around the location as a precaution. The investigation is ongoing. Earlier reports said that the average pressure of 105 bar had dropped to 7 bar on the German side. The Danish energy authority reported that natural gas was leaking from one of the two Nord Stream 2 pipelines. But the incident was not expected to have any impact on Danish gas security. The shipping authority in neighbouring Sweden also warned merchant ships in the Baltic Sea of the leak, they told dpa. Construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was all but done at the time of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In light of that, Germany opted to block approval for pipeline operations to begin. Since then, Russia has turned off the tap of Nord Stream 1, its other gas pipeline to Germany, arguing that Western sanctions imposed because of the invasion have made it impossible to maintain the pipeline.
