Moscow, 8 October 2022 (dpa/MIA) - A large fire has broken out on a railway bridge to the Russian-occupied Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, according to Russian authorities. A wagon carrying fuel was on fire, according to images circulated in Russian and Ukrainian media on Saturday. The road running along that part of the bridge was also badly damaged, according to the reports. All traffic was suspended. The fire broke out after several heavy explosions on the peninsula, but it was unclear exactly what had happened, according to Crimean authorities. The government in the Crimean city of Simferopol announced that they were considering putting in place a ferry connection. Initial reports indicated that there were no injuries or deaths from the fire. The bridge was inaugurated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and was built after Russia annexed the peninsula in 2014. Kiev has vowed to retake Crimea, as well as the other four regions annexed by Russia during the course of the war in Ukraine which began in February. Kiev has repeatedly threatened to set fire to the bridge. Recently, several drones have exploded in the Kerch region, which is directly next to the bridge. Moscow had warned Ukrainian forces against targeting the bridge, and said that it could target military command centres in Kiev in response. Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered an official investigation into the cause of the fire on a bridge to Crimea on Saturday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, according to the Interfax news agency. Russian anti-terrorism authorities, cited by state news agency TASS, said that a truck had exploded on the road part of the bridge, causing fuel tanks of a train headed to the Crimean peninsula to catch fire. "Two spans of the road bridge partially collapsed," the statement read.
