Lampedusa migrants to be relocated after clearing of overcrowded camp

Lampedusa migrants to be relocated after clearing of overcrowded camp

Italy's Interior Ministry sent a naval ship to Lampedusa on Saturday to relocate 600 migrants from a camp on the island marked by severe overcrowding and hazardous living conditions.

The facility is being cleared after a debate triggered by reports on the conditions at the camp, which recently housed 1,800 people despite only being intended to accommodate 350. Further relocation efforts are planned for Sunday, with migrants to be brought to other refugee camps in southern Italy. The ministry said those who were vulnerable were being handled as a priority in the evacuation effort. Mayor Filippo Mannino said the reception centre should be completely evacuated by Monday, according to ANSA news agency. The former mayor of Lampedusa, Giusi Nicolini, published pictures and a video of the camp on Facebook on Friday. People could be seen lying on old foam mattresses, some in the open air. Some parts of the building were filled with rubbish. The refugees and migrants shown in the images included pregnant women and children. "The pictures could be from Libya. But no, this is Italy," he wrote. Flavio Di Giacomo, of the UN Organization for Migration's (IOM) Mediterranean Office, spoke of a "disgrace on Lampedusa" in a tweet on Saturday. Meanwhile, far-right politicians like Lega leader Matteo Salvini and Giorgia Meloni of the Fratelli d'Italia blamed the situation on failings by the left and Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese, who is independent. Italy's Interior Ministry has registered more than 30,000 people reaching the country's coast by boat so far this year. Many risk the perilous sea crossing from North Africa to flee war and poverty. Often there are accidents, as many make the journey in dilapidated vessels. Some are picked up by humanitarian rescue boats.
