Kyuchyuk: Most important for liberals that EU enlargement continues
Skopje, 20 November 2022 (MIA) – MEP and Co-President of the ALDE party, Ilhan Kyuchyuk, told Sunday’s conference organized by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) ahead of its eighth congress, it is most important for the liberals that the EU enlargement continues, because it can contribute to the transformation of societies and economies in countries like North Macedonia.
He pointed out that North Macedonia sees stability when it comes to reforms at home, noting that the reforms are not only for the benefit of politicians, but for the benefit of the entire country, and particularly future generations.
“Europe is changing, hopefully for the better, and is making its own reforms. For us liberals, it is most important that the enlargement continues, because we really believe it can contribute to countries like North Macedonia transforming their societies and economies, and be part of the larger family,” said Kyuchyuk.
He mentioned criticism towards the EU from a large number of people whose expectations had not been met. He also mentioned the veto for North Macedonia and Albania, as well as the visa regime for Kosovo, pointing out that now there is a new reality.
“We have a new reality now, where we can go together, and speed up the enlargement process,” said the MEP and ALDE party Co-President.
Earlier on Sunday, LDP leader Goran Milevski addressed the conference, urging it is necessary for the country to overcome obstacles and fears at home in order to start negotiations with the EU as soon as possible.
Coordinator of the Liberal South East European Network and former Defense Minister of Slovenia, Roman Jakič, former MP with the European Affairs Committee and LDP Vice-President Juliana Nikolova, Kosovo MP Eliza Hoxha, and Head of Policy and Research at the European Liberal Forum (ELF), Antonios Nestoras, took part in the first panel of the conference entitled “Keeping up the new momentum in the EU enlargement”.
