Kovachevski vows to support a solution allowing citizens to exercise right to vote

Skopje, 5 March 2024 (MIA) - SDSM leader, Dimitar Kovachevski, said Tuesday that the party supports the proposal for citizens who have personal documents bearing the country’s old name to be able to vote at coming elections.

He, during a press conference after visiting the Brzanov winery in the village of Trubarevo, responding to a journalist's question, pointed out that the proposal has been discussed since the end of last year.

"We will support and discussions are already underway. The working groups dealing with the Electoral Code since the end of last year are working on a solution to include a provision allowing every citizen to exercise their voting rights,” Kovachevski said.

In regard to the number of citizens who do not possess personal documents, he said that he cannot provide an exact number, but stressed that they must be granted the right to vote in elections.

“The precise number of citizens can be disclosed by the State Election Commission and the Ministry of Interior.  However, it involves approximately 100,000 citizens who must be guaranteed the right to vote in the elections,” he said.

Kovachevski also stated that regarding the candidate lists for the parliamentary elections, SDSM will have candidates in all six electoral units.

“The process of nominating candidates for parliamentary lists is currently ongoing. I can confirm that we have more than a thousand potential candidates proposed by municipal organizations, out of which approximately 600 have submitted their nominations. Currently, the party secretariat is engaged in communication with municipal organizations to conduct the initial selection process,” Kovachevski said.

Regarding the support for presidential candidates in the second round, he stated that all citizens who advocate for the country's accession to the EU by 2030 will vote for Stevo Pendarovski.

“We have a clear offer for the Macedonian voters, and that is a candidate who represents the same values as our party. All citizens who advocate for the country's accession to the EU by 2030 will support the presidential candidate Stevo Pendarovski,” Kovachevski stated
