Kovachevski: VMRO-DPMNE hides behind the people, says one thing to citizens another to foreign embassies

Skopje, 10 March 2023 (MIA) – The only thing VMRO-DPMNE has done recently is hide behind the people. They say one thing in the embassies and another in front of the citizens, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski on Friday when asked about his expectations regarding the constitutional amendments which require a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

“With the exception of eight MPs, VMRO-DPMNE opposed Macedonia’s NATO membership. The same party today opposes the continuation of the country’s path to EU membership. They go to embassies and say ‘Give us power, then give us a period to adapt and then we will amend the Constitution’. This is what they say in the embassies, they can deny it but the question is who are they lying to? Are they lying to the citizens when they say they won’t support the constitutional amendments, or are they lying to the foreign embassies that they will amend the Constitution? They should come out and answer,” said Kovachevski.

He added that all MPs are obliged to support the development of their country because “when we created this country we decided it will become an EU and NATO member.”

“If you take a look at the polls, you will see that the Macedonian citizens see the EU as the most significant and largest partner of our country – in terms of trade, economy, and also as a place where they would like to live… In the polls, they state that it is up to the politicians to make the difficult decisions. Leadership means taking decisions for the future of current and future generations, and not hiding behind the people,” said the PM.

Kovachevski said that the opposition is blocking Parliament and every committee that is in the process of adopting an important law for the citizens, businesses, reforms…

“This is their only strategy. Take a look at the 50 municipalities that they hold and identify one thing that they have done, only photo sessions and statements on how certain things are bad,” said Kovachevski. ad/ik/
