Skopje, 22 May 2024 (MIA) — SDSM leader Dimitar Kovachevski is officially resigning from the post of party president and has requested that the party convene a congress and organize internal elections.
Kovachevski confirmed his resignation at the party's Executive Board session earlier on Wednesday, SDSM said in a press release.
He had originally announced his resignation on May 8, on moral grounds and in accordance with the Party's Statute.
At the session, Kovachevski initiated the convening of a congress during which the bodies of the party would be put to a confidence vote after the results in the recent elections, SDSM said.
In his letter to the Executive Board and Central Board chairwoman Slavjanka Petrovska, Kovachevski said the May 8 parliamentary elections and presidential runoff had been held in a fair and democratic atmosphere, in line with European standards.
"This represents an enormous step forward as a result of the high degree of democracy, freedom of the media and the peace and stability we established in the country over the past years," he pointed out. mr/
