Kovachevski: Parliament has capacity to decide on continuation of country’s European path

Skopje, 14 November 2022 (MIA) – The country’s European path depends on the constitutional changes. It now depends on the 120 lawmakers. I can tell you there are 120 MPs who are responsible not to the Government but their children, the children of their friends and relatives, to make a decision that will secure their future – EU membership, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski on Monday. PM Kovachevski, who held a joint press conference with Albanian counterpart Edi Rama, was quizzed if there are enough MPs to pass the constitutional changes, considering VMRO-DPMNE’s claim there is no majority for such a decision. “This road will not be easy, both for Macedonia and Albania. This is a path of negotiations, reforms, changing societies for the better. Nevertheless, at the end of that road there is a grand prize – full-fledged EU membership. The reward is that our citizens and future generations live in the EU, that proud Macedonians and all people living in this country are members of the EU with their heads held high and speaking the Macedonian language,” said Kovachevski. He said the Parliament has the capacity to decide on continuation of the country’s European path without going 2-3 steps back to a time of uncertainty and isolation, not knowing what the next day would bring. “Our deputies are aware they will make a decision that gives citizens and institutions a clear vision that the country moves towards EU membership, where it belongs,” added Kovachevski. He reiterated it was not easy to made decisions over the past five years, not only for the sake of North Macedonia joining the EU but also for a better living standard, rule of law, better infrastructure, better services for citizens. The PM noted that the real threat on the European path came from a political party that opposes EU accession and NATO membership and the Berlin Process in its programme. “This political party is Levica and its leader (Dimitar) Apasiev. And an even bigger threat is that the party is taking VMRO-DPMNE and its leader hostage, because he is weak, having no stance on anything or vision. This is what the Macedonian opposition is about right now. I believe that a political arsonist should not be allowed to stop the country’s European path,” assessed Kovachevski.
