Kovachevski: Off-peak daytime electricity rate result of increased production, energy crisis turned into opportunity

Skopje, 16 December 2023 (MIA) - The production and supply of energy is reliable and continues into this heating season since October 15 when the heating season began, as ESM was prepared for it, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski.

In an interview with Fokus, PM Kovachevski added that ESM has carried out all overhaul activities during the summer time in order to prepare for the winter, the Government said in a press release.

Kovachevski noted that last year's crisis was managed amid extremely difficult conditions thanks to the persistence and commitment of workers from all energy facilities, resulting in uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the winter.

In the interview, the PM also mentioned that in the past years, ESM has carried out major overhauls activities in REK Bitola, which had not been done for a long time, and funds, time and effort were invested in order to strengthen the capacities, so that they are more durable and more reliable in the production process.

"With the right policies, support and growth of investments in renewable energy sources, we managed to turn the crisis into an opportunity," Kovachevski pointed out.

There are many more projects and investments planned to come in the area of renewable sources, he added.

"North Macedonia is a leader in the energy transition, we turned our country into a green energy hub. We are the first country in the Western Balkan region to adopt a strategy for the development of the energy sector, based precisely on the pillars of the EU's Green Deal. These are strategic policies, which in the long-term enable energy stability and independence of the state," the PM said.

He noted that in addition to reliable supply of electricity, in times of crisis, the priority has been and still is to protect citizens against price shocks.
