Kovachevski: Media free to determine own editorial policy, only Ahmeti can explain his position

Kovachevski: Media free to determine own editorial policy, only Ahmeti can explain his position

Skopje, 16 January 2023 (MIA) – Transparency in the country has been improved in the last year and an editor or journalist has never been called by the government in order to influence the media’s editorial policy, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski on Monday in answer to a journalist’s question regarding DUI leader Ali Ahmeti’s remarks about two TV channels.

Commenting on the statement in which Ahmeti expressed his dissatisfaction with the coverage of events in his party by two TV channels, PM Kovachevski said the statement is probably based on certain facts and directed the journalist to seek an explanation from the DUI leader himself.

“I can only share my personal opinion about the behaviour of certain media outlets. In the country we have a media outlet which editorial policy is more akin that of a company trading in energy resources, and then there is also an outlet which editorial policy is like the editorial policy of a political party’s communication team,” said Kovachevski.

The PM said he would not allow the practices of the past to return and that today the media are free to determine their own editorial policy as they see fit, adding that there are institutions in the country that regulate the work of the media and they are independent from the government. ad/ik/
