Skopje, 1 December 2023 (MIA) - I do not expect electricity prices to increase, especially for the 90 percent of citizens in the first and second block, who consume, I would say, a normal amount of electricity that is needed per household, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) will have the final word on that, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski said on Friday regarding the possible increase in electricity prices.

The price of electricity bills, he noted, does not depend only on the electricity that the distributor gets from the Power Plants of North Macedonia (ESM), but also on other pricing elements.

"ERC will determine the final price of electricity, because they calculate the margins of each player on the market, transmission system, losses, etc." Kovachevski said.

As of today, the low electricity rate will be reinstated for over 170 thousand households with digital electricity meters, or one-third of the approximately 700 thousand households in North Macedonia, in the period between 1 pm and 3 pm. The rest will have to wait for their electricity meters to be adjusted. 

Kovachevski called on universal electricity supplier EVN Home to replace all regular electricity meters with digital as soon as possible, seeing as how they successfully dealt with the energy crisis the previous winter.

"This government installed 600 MW of renewable energy which provides a low electricity rate during the day, mainly from 1pm to 3pm,that is cheaper than the basic energy that is produced. I call on EVN to quickly adjust all electricity meters. They have the knowledge and expertise, as was shows during the largest energy crisis last winter, as a company that can cope well with challenges," Kovachevski added. ssh/sk/
