Skopje, 30 June 2023 (MIA) – The constitutional amendments will be submitted to Parliament when the Government determines they should be. The process won’t stop, and it will continue in parliamentary procedure. I am convinced that the Macedonian MPs, regardless of their party affiliation, will make a decision securing the citizens’ European future, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski on Friday.

The PM said it would be best for the amendments to be adopted with the support of all political parties.

“This is not a process of a single man, party or Government, but a broad, societal process that secures the country’s European future. This process cannot be held hostage by the political career of a single man. We need politicians who adopt solutions for the future, and not politicians who constantly talk about the past. Each time we avoid making a decision in the present, we lose 20 years of the future,” underlined Kovachevski.

The PM stressed that the adoption of the amendments is not a process that should be rushed, but it should be made quickly.

“We need a quick, but not a rushed process. We need a constructive environment, and it is already becoming more constructive, the accusations of Bulgarization, assimilation, loss of the Macedonian language and identity have already been dismissed,” stressed Kovachevski.

Regarding the statement of Dutch Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop on the constitutional amendments, the PM said that he too is constantly stating that the Euro-integrations process means the adoption of many reforms.

“Ambassador Kop always has exceptionally direct statements which aren’t contrary to what I have been saying. The process of EU integrations means the adoption of many reforms, and this is not the first, nor the last, two-thirds vote in Parliament for our full-fledged EU membership. We are eagerly awaiting the reports from the screening process, because they will point to the anomalies within a large part of the institutions, the functioning and implementation of legislation in the country,” said Kovachevski.
