Kovachevski – Aggeler: After joining NATO, North Macedonia should become EU member

Skopje, 2 June 2023 (MIA) - Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski met Friday with the US Ambassador Angela Price Aggeler and discussed crucial issues regarding the progress of North Macedonia in the European integration, whereat they pointed out the importance of all political parties to support the country's EU path, the government said in a press release.

During the meeting, they expressed expectations that all political leaders will take into account the current context of developments and that upcoming political decisions in the Parliament will be made in that direction.

“As a government, we respect the goodwill of our great and strategic partner, the USA, as well as other friendly countries, members of NATO and the EU, which support us in the next step in European integration, which has a determining direction towards the country’s full EU membership. It is realistic to expect this to happen by 2030, and we are ready to work on the necessary reform processes with even greater intensity. Citizens deserve to live in a member state of Europe, with a European quality of life and a European future for young people, in their native country,” Kovachevski said at the meeting.

The clear message of the USA has been reaffirmed that after joining NATO, North Macedonia should become a member of the EU, for which our country has strong and concrete support from the USA.

“Sincere long-term friendship and successful strategic partnership between North Macedonia and the USA, which is developed on the principles of trust and understanding, was reaffirmed at the meeting with the US Ambassador Aggeler, as well as at the meeting between Prime Minister Kovachevski and the US Senator Chris Murphy in Skopje and at the meetings with highest-ranking US officials Blinken and Escobar in the USA,” reads the press release.
