Skopje, 5 May 2024 (MIA) - The "Worth It" coalition of the ethnic Albanian opposition is hopeful that Election Day will be peaceful, although, it says, there are elements of voter intimidation and coercion linked to certain structures in the police. 

"We hope Election Day will be peaceful, although there are elements of intimidation and coercion linked to the authorities, i.e. certain structures in the police, especially in the Department of Internal Affairs in Tetovo," Besa Movement leader Bilal Kasami said on Sunday. 

He also called on the political opponents to contribute to a peaceful Election Day so the country continues on the European integration path after May 8. 

According to Kasami, about 5,000 expatriates have arrived in the country to vote on May 8 for the "Worth It" coalition, and this number is expected to reach 10,000.

"We have information that certain DUI structures have sent people from the Customs and the police to the Tabanovce border crossing to dissuade our expats from voting. We call on our opponents to contribute to a peaceful Election Day. May the best one win, those who have the best offer, so that Macedonia returns to the path of European integration after May 8," Kasami said in a statement to the media. 

He pointed out that their election program provides for over EUR 100 million per year for the municipalities with a predominantly Albanian population, which will be allocated to improving the infrastructure and economic development.
