Kane leads Bayern into last 16, Barcelona fight back for win
- Harry Kane missed a penalty but scored twice to lead Bayern Munich to a 2-0 win against Union Saint-Gilloise and into the Champions League last 16, while Liverpool are also on track for direct qualification after a 3-0 victory at Olympique Marseille on Wednesday.
Berlin, 22 January 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Harry Kane missed a penalty but scored twice to lead Bayern Munich to a 2-0 win against Union Saint-Gilloise and into the Champions League last 16, while Liverpool are also on track for direct qualification after a 3-0 victory at Olympique Marseille on Wednesday.
Barcelona fell behind but fought back for a 4-2 win against Slavia Prague, and Chelsea entered the top eight thanks to a 1-0 triumph against Pafos.
Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao claimed a 3-2 comeback win at Atalanta, Juventus beat Benfica 2-0, and Newcastle defeated PSV 3-0.
In the early games, Eintracht Frankfurt were eliminated after a last-minute 3-2 defeat to Qarabag and Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw with Galatasaray.
Kane owns the night
Bayern only found the breakthrough in the 52nd minute as Harry Kane nudged a corner from Michael Olise into the net.
The England captain doubled their lead in the 55th minute, converting a penalty he earned himself after being fouled by Kjell Scherpen.
The Germans secured the win and will be happy with direct qualification to the last 16 with one game left.
However, the game ended on a bitter note. Defender Minjae Kim was sent off in the 63rd after receiving a second yellow card, while Kane missed a penalty in the 81st.
"Last year, we didn't achieve that (direct qualification to the last 16). This was an important win. We scored at the right time," Kane told broadcaster DAZN.
The win was Bayern's 250th victory in the Champions League/European Cup, just the second club in history to reach the mark. Real Madrid are the only other, having notched 306 wins prior to this week's matchday.
Barcelona overcome early scare
Vasil Kusej stunned Barcelona as he gave Prague the lead in the 10th. Michal Sadilek's corner was glanced on across the face of the goal and Kusej put the ball over the line.
But Fermin Lopez scored a brace in the 34th and 42nd, thanks to assists from Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, to turn things around for the Spanish champions.
Prague, however, were level in the 44th after Robert Lewandowski scored an own goal when trying to clear a corner.
Dani Olmo returned the lead to Barça in the 63rd, scoring from the edge of the box, before Lewandowski redeemed himself with a goal in the 71st to put the game to bed.
"It wasn't easy to play today, it was too cold and Slavia played very well with transitions, dangerous balls. We improved a lot in the second half," coach Hansi Flick said.
Barça are ninth, tied with Chelsea, who's the last team in the last 16 qualification zone.
Liverpool close to last 16
Liverpool are fourth and need a win in the final game of the league phase to secure a spot in the last 16.
Dominik Szoboszlai's powerful low free-kick broke the deadlock for Liverpool shortly before the break.
The Reds doubled their lead thanks to Geronimo Rulli's own goal in the 72nd and Cody Gakpo sealed the win in stoppage time.
"A good performance, a good win - and on to the next one," captain Virgil van Dijk said.
Frankfurt eliminated
Despite a coaching change, Frankfurt continued their winless run and are out of the Champions League.
The Bundesliga side dismissed coach Dino Toppmöller last Sunday, but interim boss Dennis Schmitt couldn't put the team back on winning ways.
Their last victory was in the Bundesliga match against Augsburg on December 13.
Camilo Duran gave Qarabag the lead in the fourth minute. But Frankfurt quickly hit back as Can Uzun levelled in the 10th.
The Germans were awarded a penalty after Bahlul Mustafazade fouled Ansgar Knauff and Fares Chaibi scored from the spot in the 78th.
Frankfurt thought that would be the winner, but Duran completed his brace in the 80th and Mustafazade's sealed the win for the hosts with the last kick of the match.
With one game left, Frankfurt can't reach the top 24 any more and, therefore, won't qualify to the play-offs to the knock-out stages. Qarabag, meanwhile, are 18th.
"It's extremely frustrating to lose the match after being in front. We made the same mistakes as in previous weeks and in doing so we’re robbing ourselves of victory a bit," board member for sport Markus Krösche.
