Skopje, 16 July 2024 (MIA) – Justice Minister Igor Filkov held a meeting Tuesday with Gabriel Gualano de Godoy, Representative for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), during which they discussed the cooperation between the Ministry and UNHCR, as well as the institutional and material assistance as key for strengthening the capacities for finding sustainable solutions for people in vulnerable situations, the Ministry of Justice said in a press release.

Filkov and Gualano de Godoy agreed to take joint activities in the coming period, as well as pay a visit to the Transit Center in Gevgelija in order to ensure migrants have an easier and unobstructed access to the procedure for the recognition of the right of asylum.

According to the press release, Gabriel Gualano de Godoy voiced gratitude over the Ministry’s commitments to providing assistance, as well as “coordinating the process of providing a systemic and permanent solution to the decades-long issue of roughly 700 persons in the country who were unregistered and not listed in the birth registry book, making us the first country in Europe and second in the world to solve the issue of unregistered persons”.

The bilateral cooperation and realization of projects will continue in the coming period, the Ministry said.
