Joveski: Prosecutor's Office not consulted over Criminal Code amendments, attempting to save some cases facing expiry of statute of limitations

Skopje, 27 September 2023 (MIA) - The Government and the Parliament did not forward the Criminal Code amendments to the competent institutions, probably due to its adoption in an expedited EU-flegged procedure, said Chief Public Prosecutor Ljubomir Joveski on Wednesday.

Joveski said the Prosecutor's Office is currently attempting to save some of the cases facing expiry of the statute of limitations.

"We will try to save some cases if there are grounds for this, and confiscate assets if there is evidence for such seizure," Joveski told reporters.

According to him, not many cases are facing an expiry of the statute of limitations, while the problem of reclassifying the crime will emerge in others.

"Of course, it is not pleasant for prosecutors to see cases they have worked on for many years, complex cases that require evidence obtained through international legal assistance, being reclassified for a milder crime," said Joveski.
