Jordan to host high-level Gaza aid conference in June

Amman, 31 May 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Jordan said Friday it will host an international conference next month to mobilize humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip in mid-June, state media reported.

The PETRA news agency reported the conference will be held on June 11 in the Dead Sea region in coordination with Egypt and the United Nations.

The meeting is to take place at the level of heads of state and government, as well as heads of international and humanitarian aid organizations. It was not initially known who exactly would attend.

Jordan and Egypt have repeatedly denounced the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of Israel's air and ground campaign in response to the October 7 massacres by Hamas militants.

Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979.

In the current Gaza war, the North African country is mediating with the US and Qatar between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994. The country is home to more than 2 million registered Palestinian refugees, the largest number of such refugees in the world.
