Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake dies aged 84
Tokyo, 9 August 2022 (dpa/MIA) — Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake has died at the age of 84. He succumbed to liver cancer on August 5, his office announced on Tuesday, according to Japanese media. Since the 1970s, he pursued the concept of making clothes from a single piece of fabric. His designs with innovative silhouettes and heavily pleated fabrics are famous. This is how Miyake's sensational collections "Pleats Please" and "A-POC" came into being. Born in Hiroshima, Miyake studied in Tokyo and Paris and presented his first collection in New York in 1970. In 2005, he was honoued for his life's work with the Japanese Praemium Imperiale (Imperial Prize in Latin), which is also considered the Nobel Prize for the Arts. A year later, he was awarded the Kyoto Prize for his "visionary clothing concepts." The Kyoto Prize, established in 1984 by Kazuo Inamori, founder of the Japanese technology corporation Kyocera, is one of the most important awards in the field of science and culture alongside the Nobel Prize.
