Ixhet Memeti no-show at Public Prosecutors' Council session, mulls stepping down as vice-chair

Ixhet Memeti no-show at Public Prosecutors' Council session, mulls stepping down as vice-chair

Skopje, 29 May 2024 (MIA) - Council of Public Prosecutors member Ixhet Memeti, who is currently under precautionary measures as a suspect in an investigation related to the crime of “accepting a reward for unlawful influence”, did not arrive at the Council's session on Wednesday.

Public Prosecutors' Council chair Dushica Dimitrieska said that just ahead of Wednesday's session, Memeti has informed her that he won't be attending it.

"Just ahead of the session he informed me that he will not attend it, and he mulls stepping down as Council of Public Prosecutors vice-chair," said Dimitrieska.

Memeti is the second suspect in the investigation related to the crime of “accepting a reward for unlawful influence” involving Supreme Court judge Nake Georgiev as the first suspect.

In a media statement last week after the Skopje-based Criminal Court ordered the precautionary measures, suspect Memeti said it is in everyone’s interest for the procedure to be concluded as soon as possible.

“It’s in my interest and in the interest of the public for the institutions to do their job as soon as possible. This strikes me as a man, however, it’s not good to discuss a court process in front of the media. I assure you it will be concluded swiftly, and it will be revealed that I haven’t done anything illegal,” Memeti said.

Previously, the Basic Criminal Court ordered a 30-day detention for Supreme Court judge Nake Georgiev over suspicions that he might obstruct the criminal procedure by influencing witnesses, as well as circumstances which point to the possibility he might finish or repeat the criminal offense.

Georgiev and Memeti are suspects in an investigation launched by the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption. They are suspected of “accepting a reward for unlawful influence”.

The probe was launched after an action from the Interior Ministry following a report from the son of a suspect in a separate case led at the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption.
