Italian air traffic control, ground handling staff go on strike

Rome, 14 July 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Italy's air traffic control and external ground handling workers are planning to go on strike on Saturday, amid the peak travel season, meaning delays are likely.

Many flight connections could be affected, Italian media reported on Friday. Airlines called on passengers to check the status of their flights and expect possible cancellations and delays.

Ground staff handling checking in at Italian airports are planning to walk out from 10 am to 6 pm (0800 to 1600 GMT) on Saturday.

In addition, pilots working for Malta Air, who handle Ryanair flights in Italy, plan to strike from 12 pm to 4 pm.

Pilots and flight attendants working for budget airline Vueling were called on to strike on Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm.

Ryanair issued an announcement saying flights to and from Italy would be limited or cancelled due to the strikes.

The airline ITA Airways will face cancellations of some 133 flights on that day.
