Israeli soldier killed in attack in East Jerusalem
Tel Aviv/Ramallah, 9 October 2022 (dpa/MIA) - An Israeli soldier has been killed in an attack on a checkpoint in East Jerusalem and another seriously injured, the military said on Sunday. Police arrested three suspects and are still searching for a 22-year-old Palestinian from the Arab eastern part of Jerusalem. The incident occurred on Saturday night. The police said the suspect had approached the Shu'afat checkpoint barricade in a vehicle, then got out and opened fire on the security forces. The suspected attacker escaped on foot. Tensions have been running high in the occupied West Bank for months. Earlier on Saturday, two 17-year-old Palestinians were killed in a raid by the Israeli military in the northern West Bank. On Friday, a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old died in clashes with the Israeli army in the West Bank. The Israeli army has been carrying out an increased number of raids since a wave of terror in Israel earlier this year. More than 100 Palestinians have been killed this year in connection with military operations, in clashes or in attacks, according to the Health Ministry. Israel conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967. The Palestinians want the territories for their own state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
